I would like to take a moment to address Michael Darling’s LTE [letter to the editor] last week. After reading the article, I was perplexed. Frankly, I felt that the LTE came across as pompous. There will always be random people at parties. As an off-campus resident myself, I just have to accept the fact that some percentage of the alcohol we buy for parties will be consumed by people whom I have never met. It sucks but it’s true, and to expect otherwise is borderline ludicrous.
Everybody has been that person at a party at some point in college. First-years generally don’t know many off-campus residents, who tend to be juniors and seniors. Instead of shunning them all away, consider it an opportunity to meet somebody new. If you talk to them for a few minutes and then realize they are complete idiots, then there are probably plenty of other people at the party you can talk with. But don’t walk around with your nose up just because they don’t know the residents of the house.
The point is, it’s college. It’s Oxy. In my opinion one of the great draws of the school is that people are generally very accepting. Off-campus parties, if anything, are a great venue for off-campus residents to meet fellow students that they otherwise don’t interact with. So instead of telling first-years not to come to parties uninvited, take a minute the next time you’re at the keg and fill a stranger’s beer before you deem them ‘unworthy’ for the party.
