As autumn dawns on California and the weather chills, pie season has officially begun. Eateries around L.A. are preparing for Thanksgiving by baking delicious pies. Shops and diners around Eagle Rock offer a wide variety of pie choices, some better than others, all within walking or biking distance from campus.

House of Pie has an overall homey diner feel and as the name suggests, offers a cornucopia of pies. The dutch apple pie arrives smothered in a flaky butter-crumb topping. Although beautiful to look at, the slice contained an excess of sugar, with too little of the apples’ natural tang and flavor. Amid a myriad of apple pie options from other diners, House of Pie’s dutch apple pie doesn’t stand out.

Tropical looks run down from the outside, but the café is filled with vibrant balloon lights, Cuban masks and an interesting assortment of Che Guevara paraphernalia. The house special – guava and cheese pie – resembles a Danish more than it does a pie. It was served warm and tasted delicious, but didn’t offer any particularly distinguishing flavors. The unique restaurant environment of Café Tropical and variety of other original, mouthwatering baked goods are reasons enough to pay this shop a visit.

This local eatery has a subtle cuteness and offers a variety of carefully crafted eats. Auntie Em’s pecan pie stood out as the best of the three featured pies. The caramel and chocolate were perfectly proportional to the pecans and the large slice could’ve filled even the biggest pie lover’s plate. Although no longer affiliated with Occidental, Auntie Em’s is a local gem, especially for their scrumptious seasonal pies.
