This letter was written by Magdalena Cortes on behalf of Occidental’s Academic and Residential Cleaning Services staff to those who donated to the relief fund for furloughed employees. It was originally written in Spanish; an English translation follows below.
El COVID-19 no ha dejado de causar estragos. Casi estamos por finalizar el año y el virus nos sigue dando golpe tras golpe. Mundialmente se ha cobrado miles de vidas humanas y nos está hundiendo en una pobreza insoportable. Todo tipo de negocio ha sido afectado por la pandemia y Oxy no ha sido la excepción. La administración de Occidental College ha hecho hasta lo imposible por mantener la calma y más importante aún salvando los trabajos de todos nosotros, desde faculty personnel, administrative personnel, campus dining personnel and facility personnel. La familia Oxy sigue fuerte sin desfallecer su cultura y cuidado de la misión ha hecho una gran diferencia en estos tiempos tan oscuros.
El virus nos ha afectado a todos directa o indirectamente, ya sea porque algún familiar se enfermó o porque conocemos a alguien que contrajo el virus. En mi experiencia personal, he trabajado en Oxy por más de 20 años y ha sido una gran bendición ya que yo solvento más del 60% de los gastos de mi hogar. El recorte de horas afecta terriblemente la distribución monetaria que había estado establecida en mi hogar. El desempleo es un alivio a mis preocupaciones. Sin embargo, también se me ha hecho complejo el poder recibir la ayuda ya que el departamento está saturado con llamadas y cartas de todos nosotros los afectados. Se me ha hecho difícil contactarme y han pasado semanas sin poder recibir la ayuda. Mi situación, varios colegas la están experimentado ya que también el recorte de trabajo les ha afectado de gran manera. Conozco compañeros que son madres o padres solteros que son el sostén de su hogar al 100% y su condición en estos momentos es mucho más complicada.
Si, el virus nos ha traído obstáculos grandes, tristeza, soledad y zozobra. Sin embargo, esta travesía nos ha hecho percatarnos de que hay personas nobles de gran corazón que están dispuestas a apoyar al prójimo. En esta oportunidad quiero exaltar a la familia Oxy porque, como en muchas ocasiones anteriores, se ha unido, pero hoy más que nunca se ha hecho presente. Este tiempo de confinamiento no solo nos ha traído concientización, sino que también ha ayudado para poder reconocer y agradecer lo mejor de las personas a nuestro alrededor. Humildad, empatía y solidaridad son algunas de las virtudes que personas han demostrado asía con nosotros. En cuanto la noticia de que algunos departamentos trabajarían el 50% por el resto de lo que queda del año fue anunciada, muchos de los miembros de esta hermosa familia que es Oxy pusieron manos a la obra para iniciar un fondo de ayuda para todos nosotros los afectados. Muchos si no es que el resto del personal que no fue gravemente afectado por la pandemia se unieron y donaron más de $104,000 dólares para ayudar a solventar varios de nuestros gastos en el hogar.

COVID-19 has yet to cease wreaking havoc. We are almost at the end of the year and yet the virus continues handing us blow after blow. Worldwide, the virus has taken thousands of human lives and plunged us into an intolerable poverty. All kinds of businesses have been affected by the pandemic and Oxy is no exception. The administration of Occidental College has done the near impossible to maintain calm and, most importantly, save our jobs, from those of faculty to administrators to campus dining and facility personnel. That the Oxy family has continued to stay strong, without sacrificing its culture or mission, has made a huge difference in these dark times.
The virus has affected all of us directly or indirectly, whether because a family member has gotten sick or because we know someone who contracted the virus. The economy has been severely hurt, thousands have lost their income and many solid businesses have had to close — all as a result of this virus that won’t stop doing harm. The situation hasn’t been easy for anyone. Aug. 4, we received the distressing news; several Oxy departments would be affected and all Facilities employees would work half-time until the end of the year. For someone who depends on their check, who lives day to day, it was devastating.
Personally, I’ve worked at Oxy for more than 20 years and it’s been a great blessing that has allowed me to pay off 60 percent of my household expenses. The cutting of hours terribly impacts the monetary distribution that had been established in my home. Unemployment benefits are a relief for my worries. However, it has also become harder to receive assistance since the department has been saturated with calls and letters from all of those who have been affected. It has made it more difficult to contact me and weeks have passed without me being able to receive assistance. Many colleagues are experiencing my same situation, as the cutting of hours has also affected them greatly. I know coworkers — single mothers and fathers — who are their households’ sole source of income. In these times, their situation is even more complicated.
Yes, the virus has brought us sadness, great obstacles, loneliness and despair. And yet, this travesty has brought to our attention the existence of many noble people with big hearts who are willing to help their neighbors. Today, I want to praise the Oxy family because, as they’ve done on many past occasions, they’ve come together, but now more than ever they’ve been present. This time of confinement has not just brought us awareness, but has also helped us to recognize and thank the best of those who stand at our side. Humility, empathy and solidarity are just some of the virtues that people have shown us. When the news that some departments would work only half-time for the rest of the year was announced, members of this beautiful Oxy family put their hands together to start an aid fund for all of us who had been affected. Almost all of those who hadn’t been so gravely affected by the pandemic united and donated more than $104,000 to help us cover our household expenses. This outpouring of solidarity inspires us and arouses emotions of praise and gratitude.
The members of the Cleaning Services department send an enormous thank you to all of those heroes without capes who have acted with their hearts. Our sincere thanks goes out to all of you who created the aid fund and all of you caring souls who donated. Your effort was worth the cost, as it has brought us economic comfort in this period of great change. Your example inspires faith, generosity and kindness. You are a torch of light and hope.
