This is a response to last week’s post by Eva Zaret regarding the lack of females at Campus Safety.

It’s wonderful that you want females to be hired by our school’s Campus Safety force that, consists of “100% men.” However, if you would had gone to the Campus Safety office or even checked the Campus Safety website, you would have noticed that there are two females who are part of Occidental’s Campus Safety.

After all, all informed Oxy students should do a “100%” research. In fact, these two women, Director Holly Nieto and Sergeant Claudia Conde, hold a higher rank than almost every man who works for Campus Safety. Although there are thirteen officers, they are under the guidance of two great women, not men.

Moreover, when referencing female officers in your article who handle rape cases, your assumptions are 100% incorrect, again. If more research had been conducted, surely you would have known that both Director Nieto and Sergeant Conde are available on a 24 hour base and respond to all sexual assault incidents.

Perhaps no one else brought up this topic, because they unlike yourself, actually knew about the existence of these two great females on our campus. When attacking a group, especially one that works diligently to protect Oxy students, it’s better to not reinforce stereotypes and focus on facts.

As a student worker for campus safety, I myself know that there is a strenuous effort being made to recruit female officers. By stereotyping Campus Safety and writing an article based on fiction, and not fact, you have given the wider Occidental Community an invaluable lesson to take away from your letter by demonstrating that good intentions must be matched with evidence and not ignorance.

Director Nieto and Sergeant Conde work arduously to protect Oxy students and your misinformed views have demonstrated that clearly, their work is not being appreciated. It’s insulting to downplay the hard work of two great women. Occidental may have only two officers, but the college has recruited two very capable women and that is a “100%” indisputable.
