Michael Darling’s article last week is ridiculous. Yes, the letter writing campaign may be desperate, it may not work, it may not even be noticed, but what happened to trying? If you are saying you don’t want to hear Obama speak at Oxy, then I can understand your concern with the letter writing campaign. However, you said you would love to hear him speak.

My question is what are you trying to accomplish by telling others to “leave Obama alone”? Sure, maybe he won’t come and maybe he is going to ignore our efforts. But who cares? It’s not like he’s going to say “Well those Oxy kids sure are hassling me too much! Guess I’ll start some new wars in anger and blame Oxy for the recession!” The least we can do is try, and the worst he’ll think of us students is that we are overeager.

So, thanks for trying to crush others’ dreams. The rest of us, however, will keep on hoping and trying to get a legend to come to our little college. And if the end result, if successful, will benefit you, the least you can do is take your lack of hope elsewhere and let the rest of us try for you.
