It’s been very obvious since the school year started that Campus Safety has been cracking down on off-campus partying and underage drinking at Oxy. However, before they make radical changes about the alcohol issues off campus, they need to fix the issues that we have on campus. It seems unfair to have underage RAs enforcing the alcohol policy in the dorms and unsafe to not provide students with a place to go when they have concerns or problems with alcohol.

While it is clear that Campus Safety and the Reslife Staff can’t just stand by and let blatant underage drinking fly under the radar, they should not allow staff members who are also underage punish those who are drinking. By giving underage RAs the power to write other students up, Reslife is, in effect, giving RAs the ability to side step the alcohol policy. Underage RAs are able to drink, without worrying about getting written up and suffering the consequences set out in Oxy’s alcohol policy. If RAs are going to enforce the alcohol policy fairly they should be over 21.

Oxy should also provide a place for students who have concerns or problems with alcohol to go. Since RAs enforce the alcohol policy and write underage students up for drinking, many students are reluctant to go to their RA if there is an issue with alcohol. Oxy needs to provide a safe center for students to get information if they have questions about alcohol poisoning or worries about their friends’ drinking habits etc, and a safe place that is open late to take students who get alcohol poisoning or have other issues with alcohol for treatment. By providing this, Oxy would ensure that its students are more educated about alcohol, and safe if a problem with alcohol were to arise.
