Oxy’s football team’s season came to an end Saturday, as the Willamette Bearcats were too much to handle on their home turf in Salem, Oregon.
With a week of hard practice and long meetings under their belts, hopes were high heading into the game that the Tigers would bring home a win. After an opening drive touchdown for Oxy and a blocked PAT after Willamette’s first score, the Tigers looked to be in good shape leading 9-7 early in the second quarter. However, the Bearcats reeled off 21 unanswered points to close out the first half putting the Tigers in a 27-9 hole at the break.
The third quarter was defensive stalemate that highlighted the strength of each team’s respective defense, and ended without a single point being scored by either team. After this display of defense prowess in the third, both Oxy and Willamette unleashed a barrage of offense in the fourth. After the Tigers opened the quarter with a field goal both teams traded touchdowns in rapid succession for the remainder of the game. Oxy had several chances to get closer to the Bearcats in the waning minutes of the game, but a couple of successful onside kickoffs were reversed due to Tiger penalties. When it was all said and done, the final score stood at 48-33.
Despite the loss, it was another successful season for Oxy, who finished the regular season undefeated, captured its fourth SCIAC Championship in the past five seasons, and was ranked as high as 11th in the nation. The Tigers will lose ten seniors to graduation this year, nine of whom are starters.
