I love cereal. Before I came to Oxy, I would use up half a gallon of milk in only a couple days. But since I came to Oxy for the first time this August, I have yet to eat a single bowl of cereal. Why? I’m lactose intolerant, and I can’t stand cereal with soymilk.

Between the marketplace and the Cooler, students can get soymilk, skim milk, and even whole milk. With all the varieties of milk available, you’d think I could find some lactaid that doesn’t come in half-gallon cartons only. What if I want to enjoy a little cereal for breakfast in the morning? I don’t want to pay for a whole carton of lactaid so I can fill a single bowl.

I can’t choose to be lactose intolerant. It’s like every other allergy; if they can provide food for people who choose to be vegan and vegetarian, why can’t they provide food for people like me?

While we’re at it, the marketplace labels vegetarian and vegan food. Campus dining labels food that contains nuts. Why can’t they at least provide labels for food that contains lactose? I never know if some dressing or meal contains milk or dairy products without asking, and who wants to go all the way through a 10 minute line at dinner just to realize that eating it would make you sick?

Lactose intolerance should receive the same treatment as any other allergy or diet choice. I mean, it’s only fair.
