The Occidental Greek Council is hosting the 2007 Greek Week “Come to Play” on campus from April 2 to April 6. The week allows Occidental’s Greek organizations an opportunity to reach out to the entire campus.

“We want students to know that Greeks do positive things in the community, too, not just partying,” Vice President of Public Relations and Delta Omicron Tau member Jessica Cornick (senior) said. The week-long event kicked off Saturday, March 31.

“All week we are asking all the sororities and fraternities to wear our letters to show people on campus who we are, how many of us there are and that we have pride,” Delta Omicron Tau president Ashley Morganstern (senior) said. Many Greeks were in the quad during lunch on Monday for recess-type games, such as four-square. Tuesday’s event occurred during lunch in the Green Family Dining Room, where the initiation of Greeks into the Academic Greek Honor Society Gamma Sigma Alpha took place. Initiation is granted to Greeks with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher or at least one semester during the junior or senior year with a 3.5 or higher.

Wednesday’s event is Beauty and the Greek, mocking the WB show Beauty and the Geek. It will take place in the Cooler from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. and will cost $2 at the door. This is a campus-wide philanthropy event and there will also be a $10 entrance fee per two-person team.

Thursday night will be Rock the Books Night in the library from 10 p.m. to 12 p.m. This will involve all of the Greeks getting together to study on the first floor of the library. Non-Greeks are also encouraged to join.

“We want to put it out there for everyone to be a part of,” Vice President of Social Affairs and member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon John Marshall (junior) said. “Friday we are going to have Greek Olympics in the pool and that’s going to be a riot.”

Marshall mentioned the Greek Olympic Size Pool Party, which will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Taylor Pool. Alpha Male will also take place on Friday night at 8 p.m. in the Cooler, where chosen male candidates will participate in a talent contest to win the title of Alpha Male.

“We haven’t had a successful Greek Week since I was a freshman. There was a lack of cohesive programming and students didn’t know about it,” Cornick said. “We want students to know about this.”

This year’s Greek Week also attempts to build relationships between the various Greek organizations. “We had planned on having competitions between the chapters,” Student Life Coordinator and Fraternity and Sorority Life Advisor Dan Predoehl said. “But we decided to have community-building events rather than competitive events.” The Fraternity and Sorority Life Vision Statement aims to see all chapters functioning harmoniously to produce engaged campus leaders, to create cross-organizational brotherhood and sisterhood, to develop an alumni network for past, present and future fraternity and sorority members and to establish lasting, positive relationships with Occidental College.

“I am pleased with the direction fraternity and sorority life is headed as we near the end of the academic year and I am looking forward to the continued growth next year,” Predoehl said.
