I am writing in regards to Max Weidman’s opinions piece, “Girl-on-Girl Crime” in the 4/16 issue. I agree that there is a double standard society has created when it comes to male versus female sexuality, but males have the upper hand in this societal construction. They run the show.
Therefore, males have created the double standard. Think about it. If committed men weren’t sleeping around, single women wouldn’t be sleeping with them. In fact, men are really to blame for this double standard in the first place, and they aren’t blamed nearly enough for their actions.
When some biatch steals your boyfriend, you get pissed at the girl, right? Well, newsflash-he LET himself get “stolen,” so he obviously didn’t like you that much anyway. Maybe you should take your rage out on the guy (peacefully of course) and get over it.
As a female, I’ve witnessed (and yes, been a part of) some nasty fights and/or irrational hostilities with other women, but what we women really need to do is STICK TOGETHER. When we turn on one another, men are winning! If you hook up with a guy who has a girlfriend, you might think you’re gaining something, but you’re not. He is. You’re losing, as is every other member of the female sex.
So, yes Max, there is something you can do. Don’t be an asshole. Tell all your friends. If you’re not an asshole to us, maybe we women won’t be assholes to one other either.
