Two weeks ago, I attended the opening night of Occidental’s production of “The Buried Child.” As someone who never had the opportunity to see a play, it was one of my most memorable experiences since coming to Oxy. Not only was “The Buried Child” packed with humor and drama, but the acting was amazing. I wondered why no one had mentioned Occidental’s top-notch actors to me before. To top it all off, I had the privilege of watching this Pulitzer prize-winning play for the meager price of $5.
Only one thing spoiled my enjoyment of the night – the theater was empty beyond the first few rows. I was mortified that my fellow classmates couldn’t bother to walk up the hill to Keck Theater to experience some truly great entertainment. The advertising for the production was also lacking – only a few ads at the bottom of the Oxy Digest, and no posters around campus that I ever saw. I would never have heard about the play if my friend hadn’t known some of the actors.
There needs to be a stronger effort to better inform Oxy students about upcoming theater productions, and Oxy students need to take the time to support their school and experience some worthwhile entertainment. Otherwise, both Occidental’s theater and students miss out.
