The Tigers cruised past Whittier last Wednesday with a 4-1 victory. Oxy dominated on both sides of the ball, but it was their hypercharged offense that ultimately put away the Poets. Ben Waters (junior) led the charge offensively, finishing the game with a hat trick.

Oxy was the first to get on the scoreboard when, in the 18th minute, Waters scored on a ball he took all the way from the midfield point. Whittier was quick to answer Waters’s goal. In the 24th minute, Whittier’s Dan Covarrubias scored a game-tying goal when he buried the ball in the top shelf.

Oxy took the lead for good in the 44th minute when John Minger (senior) scored on a bending strike which found the back of the net untouched. Oxy took a 2-1 lead into halftime and continued to extend the margin in the second half.

In the 79th minute, Oxy added to its lead when Ben Waters scored for the second time, burying the ball in the back of the net after Poets keeper Paul Stepler-Camp blocked David Rosenberg’s (senior) shot on goal.

Waters struck again in the 87th minute with another insurance goal. This time, Waters headed the ball into the net off Rosenberg’s corner kick, sealing his hat trick and an impressive Oxy victory.

The Oxy offensive onslaught accounted for 24 total shots on the goal, including several which clanked off the post, compared to the Poets’ five shots. Tiger keeper Alex Combs (junior) finished the game with four saves.

The Tigers will look to continue their wins at their next home game against Pomona on Saturday, October 13. The game starts at 11 a.m. on the lower soccer field.
