The Oxy golf season has come and gone, and the Tigers consistently displayed their skills on the links. Going into the championships, the Tigers were in fourth place out of seven teams in the SCIAC. However, no one team proved its dominance throughout the season, as the gap between first and fourth place was maintained by a mere ten points after the last regular season match.

Despite some struggles throughout the season, the Tigers demonstrated the determination to fiercely compete at every tournament they attended.

On April 18, the Tigers hosted the final SCIAC match of the season before the conference championship match. Playing at Empire Lakes Golf Course in Rancho Cucamonga on a sunny afternoon, the Tigers finished up the course with a total score of 303, earning them second place. Sam Weiss (sophomore) led the way for the Tigers, finishing with 73 strokes, including 13 pared holes. He has been one of the sparks behind the Tigers’ run this season toward a SCIAC championship and has had the lowest amount of strokes on the team.

In addition, Miles Cole (sophomore) finished with 74 strokes, including four birdied holes. It was the first time since joining the Oxy golf team that Cole finished in the top ten of a SCIAC match.

Other members who contributed to the Tigers’ second place finish were Andrew Larkin (sophomore) and Richard Highsmith (senior), who both finished the match with 78 strokes. Larkin has also been a big stand out for the Tigers’ golf team, highlighted by his individual overall victory during the second SCIAC match of the season.

Claremont-McKenna-Scripps (CMS) easily out-played all of the competing teams, finishing the day with a total of 293 strokes. University of La Verne ended the match just one stroke above the Tigers for third place. University of Redlands, Whittier College, Cal Lutheran University and Pomona-Pitzer also competed and placed in the tournament.

This past Monday, the Tigers headed to the SGCA Course of Murrieta to face off against the rest of the SCIAC teams in the conference championship tournament. After an entire day of golf, the Tigers were able to earn themselves a tie for fourth place in the tournament and fourth place in the overall season.

Larkin ended the day with the best scores, totaling 72 and 73, and a tie for fifth in the entire tournament. Larkin rightly earned the first team all-conference honor, and teammate Weiss was also bestowed with a second team all-conference honor.

With the golf season over, Head Coach Eric Johnson and the rest of the Tigers will continue to practice on their form and their swings throughout the off-season in the hopes of putting themselves in the position to win the SCIAC come next year.
