Congratulations Oxy! You did it. Your candidate is the next president of the United States. Why do I say “you” and “your” one might ask? Is it even possible that at this school, one of the most politically liberal in the nation, that there might be one, maybe even two people, who did not vote for Obama? Shocking as it may be, there are some non-Democrats amongst us. It’s hard to believe that at a school where diversity is stressed upon on every level imaginable, that this fact is often overlooked. Or perhaps the problem is that Oxy’s definition of diversity is not as diverse as we’d like to think it is. So while you all celebrate your hope, I will actually hope. I don’t hope for Obama to bring about the changes he has campaigned for because I believe he will do the best job he can. However, I do hope that this election has raised some questions in the minds of every student at Oxy regardless of who they voted for or what they believe. I hope that the fervor of the campaign will be translated into action. Perhaps Oxy students should strive to be among the most politically active campuses (an award that goes to our neighbors over at Pitzer according to the Princeton Review). There are issues in our country, our state, our city and on our campus (that’s right, “our”) that need attention. So celebrate as you must, but as the chalk is washed away from the quad and the Obama t-shirts are thrown into the back of closets, remember: Electing a certain candidate is just not enough.
