The ASOC Senate held its weekly meeting last Tuesday, Feb. 11 in Fowler 111 to go over funding requests, to discuss ongoing campus projects and to progress toward filling the empty Senior Class Senator chair left vacant by Alex Graves (senior) and an empty Honor Board chair.

Alex Graves’ seat remains vacant following his change from full-time student status to part-time this semester to finish his comps. Calls for petitions were sent out last week, and so far only one student, Roberto Calderon (senior) has responded.

Following the submission of his petition, Calderon is considering withdrawing. When asked why he would be withdrawing his application, Calderon said, “I don’t think it would be academically wise given my load this semester.”

ASOC President Patrick McCredie (senior) then addressed the poor attendance of Senators to GA meetings, and reminded Senators that these meetings are integral to their duties. “It’s your duty as senators to do that, and even more importantly, there are approximately $12,000 in funding requests and capital improvements in this one meeting, with $6,000 for one organization and $3,000 for two others. That’s a significant sum of money that you need to be made aware of not just for your constituency, but also for yourselves as Senators as well,” McCredie said.

Campus-wide Senator Allison Dempsey (senior) voiced a desire to put on another “Not UnHappy Hour” based on the success of the most recent event. “Students, teachers and even the people who helped work the event had a great time with it. Everyone wants to do more of them,” Dempsey said. She proposed that rather than just one more, as the ASOC had already been planning, the Senate plan to provide for two more. This suggestion was met with general approval.

A new student group, RISE, applied for funding for an event on Wednesday Feb. 12. They were denied for not officially being a club in time for their event to be funded. Since ASOC cannot fund unofficial clubs, and cannot fund events retroactively, this left RISE in a dilemma which McCredie promised to help them with after the meeting adjourned.

The Asian Pacific Islanders Association (APIA) also submitted a request of $500 for event funding, receiving $275, to buy food and supplies for their event. Their funding was approved by a vote of nine in favor, zero opposed and one abstention.

Colleges Against Cancer/Relay for Life also made a total funding request of $5,000, $1,500 of which is being funded by Programming Board. The funding algorithm granted them $2009 (40%), which the Senate voted to approve with nine in favor, zero opposed and one abstention.

Other groups that received funding approval included the hiking club, Trails and the Campus Cookout Club.
