Occidental College’s administration has arrived at a monetary settlement ensuring the public silence of 10 or more complainants involved in the sexual assault case, according to a Los Angeles Times report released Wednesdayafternoon. The women allegedly accepted an undisclosed amount in exchange for their public silence regarding the College’s handling of their cases. Current and former Occidental students were involved in the agreements.

Director of Communications Jim Tranquada shared his Times release with the The Weekly, commenting, “There is nothing I can add [to the statement].” His official response reads:

“We cannot comment except to say that this matter has been resolved. It is a confidential matter, and we intend to honor the confidentiality and privacy of those involved.”

Tranquada also included information concerning Occidental’s interim policy and the various steps that the College has taken to address the issue of sexual misconduct on campus.

Gloria Allred, the lawyer representing the 10 complainants, declined an interview with the Weekly. She, like Tranquada, stated that “We cannot comment except to say that this matter has been resolved. It is a confidential matter and we intend to honor the confidentiality and privacy of those that are involved.”

The remaining 40 plaintiffs (a total of 50 complainants, including both students and faculty, are involved in the case) have yet to comment on what the agreements mean for the case.
