United States. PayPal is hosting “Gender Equality and Inclusion in the Workplace” today, a discussion that will feature five men as panelists. The event is part of PayPal’s Unity Speaker Series and will focus on “how men and women can partner to achieve a better workplace.” The event faced immediate public criticism from people on Twitter and Facebook for not featuring any woman as panelists. “Gender equality is not just a women’s issue,” PayPal’s Global Head of Culture and Inclusion LaFawn Bailey said. A statement was also issued on Facebook by Nolwenn Godard, president of the group organizing the event, clarifying that the intent of the event was specifically to create a space for “male allies.”

Canada. Police were called to break up a domestic dispute between a man and his parrot in Brighton, Ontario, April 19. The man’s neighbors called the police around 8 p.m. after hearing him shout, “I hope you die.” Police found that the man had been drinking and was angered when his pet parrot started “beaking off” at him, as he said. The parrot was not hurt in any way, and the police decided not to press any charges. “These are the kinds of stories that police run into all the time,” Constable Steve Bates said. “It just adds some levity to the job.”

Czech Republic. A western lowland gorilla at the Prague zoo gave birth unexpectedly to a baby gorilla on Saturday. Shinda, the 24-year-old mother gorilla, was observably overweight, but none of her zookeepers was aware she was pregnant. She has had several miscarriages in the past and was not expected to have any children. Both her and her child are healthy and visitors to the zoo are now allowed to see them. “It seems that a miracle happens from time to time,” Zoo Director Miroslav Bobek said.

Wales. The world’s greenest dog, according to the Guinness Book of Records, died at age 13 yesterday. The environmentalist Labrador, Tubby, was recognized in 2011 for picking up 26,000 plastic bottles during his twice daily walks. Tubby would crush the bottles in his mouth and deliver his prizes to his owner, Sandra Gilmore, to be recycled. Gilmore said she thought Tubby had collected over 50,000 bottles in his lifetime. He was the first pup to hold the Guinness record. “It was a pleasure to have Tubby feature in the book,” a spokesman for Guinness World Records said.
