The Oxy Men’s Water Polo team took to the pool on October 12 to battle the Connecticut College Camels in a non-SCIAC match. From the opening minute, the Tigers dominated the match. Goals poured in from everywhere as Oxy jumped out to a 10-2 first quarter lead. The Tigers did a great job of drawing penalties and creating man-up situations for themselves, which they took advantage of with great success.

In the second quarter, Oxy maintained its lead, although the offense slowed a bit from their feverish early pace. Oxy scored five goals in the period and headed into halftime up 15-6.

In the second half, the Tigers continued their offensive onslaught while holding the Camels in check on the defensive end. Goalkeeper Blair Bergsteinsson (sophomore) made several spectacular saves that drew cheers from the crowd.

Bergsteinsson also threw several beautiful outlet passes that led to easy goals for the Tigers. The third quarter ended with Oxy up 19-8 and in complete command of the game.

In the fourth quarter, the Tigers pulled out all the stops, using both their goalies-Bergsteinsson and Max Kelly (sophomore)-on the offensive end at different times during the match. Not only did both keepers play offense, but both also managed to score a goal.

In addition to the keepers’ goals, the Tigers managed two more goals in the fourth while giving up two to Connecticut College for a final score of 23-10. The scoring for the match was well balanced, with a total of 16 different Tigers putting the ball into the net. Andrew Valdes (junior) and Cameron Brahmst (junior) led the Tigers in scoring with four goals each.

The Tigers finished out the rest of the weekend with two more wins. In their SCIAC opener, the Tigers trashed Cal Tech 21-2. Oxy also scored a nail-biting 13-12 victory over Fresno Pacific. The 3-0 weekend pushed the Tigers record to 10-7 and 1-0 in SCIAC play.

Watch the Men’s Water Polo team take on the Stanford Cardinal in their next home match on Sunday, October 21 at 4 p.m. at Taylor Pool.
