I am writing in response to Katy Dhanens article, “War Crimes for Far-Reaching Investigation”, in which she asserted “the Obama Administration must prosecute the Bush Administration for its crimes in order to restore the faith of the people in the American government.” While I understand her sentiment and reasonable desire to seek retribution and assert this nation’s commitment to the rule of law for an admittedly nefarious, and, yes, likely illegal past eight years, is this really what is needed to restore faith in the American executive? We were promised change time and time again and it is my opinion that a prolonged and overly litigious battle is not the change this country needs. We need for jobs to be created and for the NASDAQ to rise, we the stimulus package to not only achieve these goals but also reinstate confidence so that Americans spend and rejuvenate the economy, and we need a plan for our exit from a bloody tenure in Iraq. As a country we are at battle domestically and abroad and this is where our focus, and especially the focus of our Commander in Chief, needs to lie. Those worried that George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, and Dick Cheney are sleeping too well in light of their prior transgressions need only look to our future successes to find vindication. I don’t mean to speak on behalf of all Americans, or all Occidental students for that matter, but it is my firm belief that we need to leave the untenable moments of our past where they are and put our efforts into making sure that there is never another Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo Bay.
