This year has been quite an exciting season for college football. There have been upsets galore as well as some surprisingly successful teams that most people didn’t expect to do very well this season.

With the BCS standings recently released, we’ll start with a rundown of some of the top teams in the nation at this moment.

In the number one spot sit the Florida Gators, who are currently undefeated with a record of 8-0 and 6-0 in conference play. The team’s quarterback and former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, who went out with a concussion, has come back and continues to lead them to victory after victory, although many of their games have ended with closer scores than expected. The defending National Champions are hoping to keep their record spotless and find their way into the National Championship game for a second year in a row.

The second-ranked team is the Texas Longhorns, who are currently 8-0 and 5-0 in conference games. Fielding one of the better quarterbacks in the nation, Colt McCoy, they have been a consistent team this year, only winning one game by less than 10 points. Their competition, however, has been stiff, which has been the difference between a second and first place ranking in the BCS for them.

Third in the standings at this moment are the Alabama Crimson Tide, who are currently 8-0 and 5-0 in conference play. Their ranking has recently been questioned after winning a game solely by the massive mound of a person that is Terrance Cody (6′ 5″, 354 lbs.), who blocked two field goals to seal the victory against Tennessee, 12-10.

After a nail-biter against the average team of Michigan State, the Iowa Hawkeyes moved into the number four spot with a record of 9-0 and 5-0 in conference play. With the majority of the games being won by less than a touchdown, Iowa has squeezed its way into the top five teams this year. But with the breadth of their competition already out of the way, they hope to finish the season undefeated and make their way into a BCS bowl game at season’s end.

Rounding out the top five teams in the BCS is the Cincinnati Bearcats, who are currently 8-0 and 4-0 in conference play. As the biggest surprise of the year, the Bearcats have blown out just about every team they’ve played this year, with only one game won by a touchdown or less. The lack of schedule strength is why they sit at the bottom of the top five instead of the top.

Other notable BCS ranked teams are the Boise State Broncos, who are ranked seventh and currently undefeated. The Oregon Ducks took the lead last week in the Pac-10 conference by demolishing the USC Trojans, coming in ranked eighth with a 7-1 record. After suffering a rough defeat from the Ducks, the Trojans have fallen to the 12th rank after being ranked fifth last week.

Local teams such as the Arizona Wildcats and California Golden Bears have also broken into the top 25 teams of the BCS, ranked 18th and 20th, respectively. Other notable teams are the Miami (Fl) Hurricanes, who are ranked 17th with a 6-2 record, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who are ranked 22nd with a 6-2 record and the Oklahoma Sooners, who have been a huge disappointment after the loss of former Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford, coming in at 24th with a 5-3 record.

With so many upsets and surprises every week, we can only wait to see who will be the last team standing in the National Championship game.
