Dear Editor,

Browsing through the Oxy Weekly’s website, I saw a poll asking whether or not students agreed with the administration’s decision to cancel Senior Smack. I asked my friends whether or not it was true, and they confirmed that the administration had in fact canceled the annual dance on the grounds that it enables sexual violence. While I understand the administrations position and praise their motives, I disagree with their actions. Nearly every senior whom I’ve spoken with about the cancellation has responded with, “We’re just going to plan it outside of the school.” This decision will undoubtedly move Senior Smack off-campus rather than preventing it, which will surely increase the danger of sexual assault. Without the regulating force of Campus Safety Senior Smack becomes a far more dangerous event, where alcohol will be served unchecked and no one will be looking out for the individual students. With this in mind, I have to ask that the administration reconsider their position on this issue.
