To the students of Occidental,

It’s customary that the first issue of The Occidental Weekly feature a “Letter from the Editor,” a treatise of sorts that expresses the current Editor-in-Chief’s goals and expectations for the semester. This letter usually contains an explication of the mission statement of The Weekly and an expression of dedication to journalistic integrity. While these are all valid topics of discussion, I wish to use this space to attempt to convey a different sentiment.

I am aware that the campus’s perception of The Weekly is less than ideal. I have heard of the “count the typos” game that takes place during lunch on the Wednesday that a new issue is released. I have read the complaints of misreported facts. I understand that the Campus Safety reports are the most frequently read section of the paper. I am absolutely aware that this is not a perfect publication. I do not expect it to be.

I have always viewed The Weekly as a learning experience above all else. Our staff is filled with intelligent and capable individuals, but we are not professional journalists. We are students, like you, that are juggling the demands of a fast-paced production schedule along with our schoolwork and other extracurricular activities. We try our best to produce quality articles within our limitations, and work diligently on Sunday and Monday nights to construct the best possible publication for the Oxy campus.

Therefore, we need your help to improve this paper – we can’t do it on our own. The next time you read The Weekly and have a complaint, let us know. If you see something you don’t like, help us fix it. The best way for us to learn and improve The Weekly is through direct input and active participation from our readers.
