The Boise State Student Union Building will display the “Greener Solutions” art show from Jan. 22 to Feb. 1, 2008. The show is part of a nationwide event called “Focus the Nation,” which aims to spread the word about global climate change. Entries to the show will come from Idaho artists and will showcase issues of climate change, sustainability and ecologically-conscious living. Artists must make their work out of recycled materials or through environmentally-friendly processes. “This art show is just one small part of a much, much larger event on campus designed to draw people’s attention to climate change,” Assistant Director of Media Relations Mike Journee said. Boise State is one of more than 1,000 universities and organizations across the nation that are participating, Nick Sutfin, a Boise State student involved with the event, said. “With the juried exhibition we hope to promote increased awareness about the effects of global climate change and the role we all play in it,” Sutfin said. The exact message of the exhibit will be determined by the type of art that is submitted to the show. “Perhaps this exhibition will demonstrate the increasing awareness about the topic that is present in both Boise and greater Idaho and give use ideas for possible changes,” Sutfin said. “After all, we have sent out a call for creative minds to focus on one particular issue: global climate change.” Any Idaho artist can submit up to two pieces of artwork to the show. Artwork can be no larger than 60 inches by 60 inches and must be ready to hang. Artists should submit a 3×5 index card along with their work that includes the artist’s name, e-mail address, phone number, title of the artwork and medium used. Entries will be accepted Jan. 16, 3 – 7 p.m. and Jan. 17, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Bergquist Lounge on thesecond floor of the Student Union Building. Awards for the exhibit are: Best of Show, receiving $500; First Place, receiving $200 and Second Place, receiving $100. Although student work is considered for all awards, there is an Honorable Mention award reserved strictly for students, with a prize of $100. Students can also win gift certificates sponsored by Boise Blue Art Supply. “One of the objectives of ‘Focus the Nation’ is to discuss both small and large changes we can all make in our everyday lives to leap this current hurdle,” Sutfin said. “We believe this event is great for Boise State and will hopefully offer simple solutions to the problems of global climate change and changes that we can make on campus.
