In light of the recent triple-digit heat, I think it would be a good time for everyone to reflect on the amount of energy they use and how our everyday actions contribute to the climate change we’re experiencing. After one of the coolest summers on record in Southern California we’ve entered into record high temperatures much later than usual, and while part of it may be natural cycles, it is hard to deny human influence as well. Simple things like turning off lights when you leave a room, drinking from a nalgene instead of buying water bottles, not idling your car for 10 minutes while waiting for a friend, turning off the a/c when you leave, not running the sink the entire time you brush your teeth, are all simple ways to reduce our effect on the planet.

According to californiagreensolutions.com, running the sink for 5 minutes uses equivalently as much energy as running a 60 watt light bulb for 14 hours. 14 hours! There’s nothing more frustrating than watching someone run the sink for 3-5 minutes twice daily while brushing their teeth, and then having to listen to them complaining about the unbearable record breaking heat. If we could all be a little bit smarter about our energy usage we could save tons of energy and resources, and lessen our impact on future generations.
