Last week’s Oxy Weekly featured an article that I wrote about the current challenges facing the Women’s and Gender Studies department. I urge students, whether they include WSGS-related courses in their studies or not, to consider the deeper meaning of this issue. Gender transcends politics, psychology, sociology, biology, literature, art, and many more formal areas of study. Moreover, gender is something that affects each and every one of us, whether we choose to actively study it or not. The problems with institutional support for the department are ones that the entire student body ought to be concerned with because they signify a lack of appreciation for students’ desire to study such a crucial academic subject.
That said, I also urge students to understand that these problems far precede President Susan Prager’s administration. President Prager was extremely accommodating in answering my questions and expressed a deep understanding of the importance of women’s and gender studies at Oxy.
This is a delicate and detailed issue and it is my understanding that this will not be the only letter regarding last week’s article—I ask students and professors to voice their opinions and share their insight on this issue so that we may better approach it.
