Jason Voorhies wasn’t a part of Oxy’s Friday the 13. Instead, the night was dedicated to a different kind of screen star: the senior film majors. After munching on hors d’oeuvres and sipping some wine, friends, family and actors gathered in Thorne Hall to watch the annual Senior Film Comps on the big screen.

At 7 p.m. Friday night, emcees Jamie Greenberg (senior) and Max Maliga (senior) took the stage to get the show started. Eight films were showcased, ranging in genres and themes.

Hobie Thompson’s mockumentary Elevator was full of interviews of fans and creators of the fictional television show of the same name (a parody of ABC’s Lost). Max Maliga screened his comedy Missing Miss Cleo, a film about two newly graduated college students who decide to become detectives. Jeff Yaroslow caught the audience’s attention with song and dance in his musical The Main Distraction about the political influences in the mass media. Rosy Valadez switched it up a bit with her documentary about Latina teenage pregnancies, The Latina Statistic. Erik Fast’s horror film, Explicit, featured a deadly confrontation between a famous rapper and a killer. Jamie Greenberg’s Timereader explored the relationship of one man and his high school sweetheart. Jon King kept his audience in suspense with his film, A Safe Place, about a man forced to confront the past that haunts his psyche. Closing the night was Shannon Pratt’s documentary Fathers, which gave the perspectives of three siblings on growing up with an alcoholic parent.

At the end of the night, the seniors said all of their hard work had paid off.

“It’s what I’ve most looked forward to since freshman year. It’s very fun to have everyone be so supportive of everybody else’s projects,” Fast said.

Notable supporters in the large audience included President Susan Prager and Film Professors Brody Fox, Esther Yau and Kjell Hilding.
