Off campus parties have frequently been broken up by LAPD in the past. Recently, however, I’ve both heard of and personally experienced an increase in these crackdowns. While I appreciate the sanctity of neighborhood silence and peace late at night, I still believe that the cops can do a better job of . . . policing. Take Saturday night. The party I was at was broken up by two police officers; they came around the back of the house, shined their enormous flashlights and told everyone to leave. We did, and it was fine, but as I stood on the sidewalk in front of the house with my friends, I watched hoards of drunk Oxy kids in a hurry to get away from the police. They attempted to maneuver their cars around the police car parked in the middle of street and ended up crashing into numerous parked cars on the street instead. Props to Freddie Allen for predicting this outcome in his “Policing Off-Campus Parties Endagers Students” article last week. The cops were still around the side of the house, and they didn’t appear to notice any of the accidents. I can only imagine the neighbors’ faces when they awoke the next morning. The LAPD should be protecting students not causing more problems. I think I’ll walk to parties from now on.
