Everyone has spent the last year or so speculating on Britney Spears’ less than flattering behavior—the pantyless car exits, the breakup with good old K-Fed, the driving with her little ones on her lap, the infamous head shaving catastrophe and the several rehab stints, to name a few incidents. In spite of all of that, she managed to deliver a solid album.
If Blackout is Brit’s idea of sweet revenge on all the doubters, tabloid columnists and stalker-razzi, then she has definitely won. Blacking out has never looked so good. With the help of hit makers like T-Pain and super-producer Pharrell Williams, this album has no shortage of hot beats and catchy choruses. While the lyrical content is rather risqué, it does not take away from how much fun it is too listen to. With the exception of one or two songs, each track makes you want to get up and dance or go out to the club and shake it like a “Freakshow,” as the title of track seven would imply.
Aside from the techno/pop/club feel to keep you dancing and thoroughly entertained, there is plenty of not-so-subtle K-Fed bashing that makes you laugh and feel sorry for Brit-Brit all at the same time. “Gimme More,” “Radar,” “Freakshow” and “Toy Soldier” are the best tracks on the album. “Hot As Ice” is catchy, and both it and “Why Should I Be Sad” are hits in their own right as well.
Overall, headphones across the country are getting a treat from Britney’s Blackout. Although Billboard and Newsday trashed Brit for her fifth album, it’s being rated on iTunes with four stars. If the critics don’t enjoy trashing on K-Fed and dance hits, they may not be ready to Blackout with Britney—but I sure am.
