Whenever students are bored or procrastinating, they can switch to the KOXY radio station to occupy their time. All listeners have to do is turn their radio to 104.7 FM. If students do not have a radio, then they can listen to KOXY through the web on http://www.KOXY.org.
Occidental College has struggled to maintain a radio network in the past few decades and the lack of interest at one point led to the station’s removal. It was not until March 30, 2000 that KOXY reactivated under the management of alum Kristian Kratz ’01. Today, KOXY is as spry as ever.
According to the mission statement on the KOXY website, “[The purpose] of KOXY Radio DJ 104.7 FM is to provide the student body with a creative media outlet . . . KOXY’s diverse programming provides students and community members with individualized entertainment for social, educational or professional interests.”
Right now, the KOXY office and DJ booth are located at the lower level of the Johnson Student center. The station broadcasts itself through FM radio and live webstream. Even listeners within the vicinity of Berkus House (formerly 1601) and various greek houses can tune in. Anyone living further off-campus can access the station through its website on the “listen” tab.
Since it is still the beginning of the fall semester, KOXY has not officially selected its DJ lineup for the year. However, there are a few shows from last year that will definitely be returning for the fall.
“Thursday Night Medicine,” as its name describes, headlines the fifth day of the week with DJs Dr. Martin Luther Krispy and Zookie the Patient. Beginning their sixth semester, the show is known to have a hip-hop influence.
DJBJP hosts another hip-hop themed show titled “Jacques Rousseau Could Never Get This Low.” DJ The Coldest Mr. Freeze hosts a similarly hip-hop themed show titled “The Joker’s 7 O’Clock Crack Central Ice Cold Baby Baby Baby.” Programming Director Zachary Lundgren (senior) would not divulge the actual names of DJ aliases.
However, he did mention that Charles Bennett (sophomore) will reprise his show, “Music and Musings.” “It [the show] include[s] funny storytelling where he enacts characters,” Lundgren said.
One newcomer is already on the list. Chelsea Moore (junior) will be hosting a show called “Deconstruction.” “[It’s] an alternative non-corporative news show . . . on social justice,” Lundgren said.
KOXY is not just responsible for its audience’s listening pleasure, but also for a series of campus wide events. KOXY is planning a kickoff in the quad on Sept. 27. They are also planning a band showcase consisting mostly of L.A. bands, possibly headlined by the band Black Black.
In the following month, KOXY is planning an event called, “Soul Sessions,” with Tebra Moses and Raphael Sadiq with a tentative date of Oct. 27. They’re also planning an event titled, “The Greek Battle For the Backyard” headed by Justin Morgan (senior) and Events Director Julian Mitchell (senior) in the spring. The event will involve national fraternities and sororities. “[It]’ll allow Oxy to experience Greek life since its limited here,” said Co-Events Director Julian Mitchell (senior).”We’re definitely going to compose a DJ showcase,” Events Director Kit Warchol said. She did not reveal a definite date, but she did mention that DJ George McIntire (junior) would be a part of the showcase.
“We want to know what the students want . . . and to innovate Oxy,” said Co-Events Director Julian Mitchell (senior).
