On behalf of all of the brothers of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, I would like to sincerely thank everyone who came out to our Halloween party this past Saturday. Unfortunately due to the unforeseen and extremely large turnout, we were forced to end the festivities much earlier than we would have liked. Not only did we have to turn away a lot of people at the door, we were also forced to ask everyone at the party to leave. If you were one of these people, we would like to offer our sincere apologies. I also hope that you can empathize with the predicament facing off campus residents this semester.

Halloween is an occasion for a costume party, and judging by the abundance of creativity I saw on Saturday, I don’t think anyone can deny us that. But the new rules that apply to the hosts of off-campus parties are making it exceedingly difficult and personally risky for any of these students to want to throw even a reasonably small shindig. This accompanied by much stricter policies in the dorms, and a lack of much else to do on campus, lead to situations like I witnessed Saturday. While I know many students ventured out into L.A., it appeared that our event was one of the only shows in town for those who chose to stay nearer to Oxy. As always, we were more than happy to host, but it is in no way feasible for anyone to think that we can accommodate the partying needs of all (or nearly all) of those who want to dress up and have fun of campus on Halloween.

This being said, as brothers of a fraternity, we have responsibilities to both adhere to the school’s policies and most importantly to respect our neighbors and the Eagle Rock community as a whole. While I hope you all were able to find a good time in whatever you did on Saturday, I also hope you can understand why we cannot have so many people in our house, or milling about in the front yard or in the street after we need to have people leave. We don’t want to blame anyone who came over. Your costumed attendance was greatly appreciated.

I am writing this letter simply to voice some frustrations that I think a lot of students, on campus and off, may share with regard to the party scene this semester. We ask for your patience while we figure out the best way to continue to have fun events like the party on Saturday while simultaneously respecting our neighbors and ensuring that we avoid punishment from the school. If we ask you to leave our event or do not let you in please do not take it personally. We don’t like turning people away from our parties but at times we have to in order to keep our parties at a reasonable size. Finally I would also like to thank the Oxy Campus Safety officers who helped us out a great deal on Saturday.
