This is a response to last week’s opinion article “Oxy Students Living a Liberal Illusion.”
There are many points that you make that I agree with, such as the lack of a conservative voice on the campus of Occidental College. However, I feel that some of your arguments need some adjustment.
You mentioned an article about the Vagina Monologues, and although I can see what point you were trying to make, I am afraid I must strongly disagree.
When someone criticizes the open female sexuality present within the Vagina Monologues, I am inclined to listen. Why is there no program that openly promotes masculine sexuality?
According to what you wrote before, liberals should be open-minded. Does this mean that masculine sexuality is excluded?
I understand that you may have a righteous anger toward those who are sexist, racist, and homophobic, but no one is above the sin of classification. I am not free of these sins, even though I try to understand every sex, race and sexual orientation. I just ask that you take it easy, not everyone shares such a strong point of view.
Maybe Occidental’s demographic is mainly “white,” but I think that is fine. You say that 58% of Oxy is white, and I say that 74.1% of America is white. Seems like a diversification to me.
Also, your figure for the amount of whites in Los Angeles seems a bit off. The U.S. Census Bureau is telling me that Los Angeles, CA is 48.7% white.
Not to burst your financial bubble, but if Oxy is a private college, I think it is safe for me to say that it should remain relatively expensive. Some friends of mine go to great (expensive) private institutions because they got amazing scholarships. Just look up Khadijah Williams online. Hard work achieves much.
Now I apologize if you took any insult. I truly did not mean to give any, and just a side note, I am one of the few conservative voices at Occidental College. Thank you for supporting our presence.
