As I read last week’s “Community of Difference” article, I was dismayed by how the precocious and self-indulgent style of writing trivialized any kind of substance the piece may have had, especially the inclusion of the phrase “these descriptions are really just here to fill space”. It’s rare and very exciting that a school as small as Oxy is able to host intellectual heavyweights like Roberto Esposito, which makes this kind of news coverage all the more disrespectful. While the Weekly is a student-run college newspaper, accessible intellectual discussion and adherence to journalistic standards are certainly not beyond its scope. Keep the gonzo prose to your journal or Steez, and please respect the awesome speakers that visit our campus.
