I am writing in response to Ms. Zaret’s letter to the editor in last week’s edition of The Weekly.
I am curious as to why she did not consult anyone in Campus Safety regarding our department. I believe if she had checked her facts about our college as thoroughly as she did with her other sources, she would have found that in a department of 15 full time employees, Occidental College’s Department of Campus Safety currently has 1 full time female Sergeant and a female Director. These numbers by sheer coincidence mirror the 13% Ms. Zaret cites in her letter. These two females are always available to discuss sensitive issues if any student male or female would prefer to speak to a female Officer. In addition to working a full time schedule, both the Sergeant and the Director have made themselves available by being on call 24 hours a day, if a situation merits.
Our diversity does not end there, our department is made of men and women, from different races and different places, we currently have Officers from Guyana, Fiji, Mexico, and Eagle Rock in our ranks. We have African Americans and Caucasians. We take great pride in being as diverse as the community we serve. Hope this clears things up.
