The Moving Monument

The planning and implementation of civic works projects is rarely a cut-and-dry task in the City of Los Angeles. The history of the “Welcome to Eagle Rock: Home of Occidental College” monument is an illustrative example of the multiple individuals, organizations and economics involved. The artist’s original rendering (left) placed the monument at the intersection of Eagle Rock and York Blvds. In the nearly two years since the project was approved, however, the weight and size of the monument raised seismic concerns, Occidental’s Director of Government and Community Relations Paula Crisostomo said. Project planners eventually moved the monument to its current location at the 134-West off-ramp on Colorado Blvd. An array of decorative garden trellises and plant boxes will surround the completed monument in the new location, as originally intended.
