For many students, the Career Development Center (CDC) is a vital resource in finding a job both on and off campus. The CDC not only helps Oxy students find jobs and fellowships, but also provides free counseling which aides students in finding a viable career path. In its latest endeavor, the CDC is making student resources available at the click of a button. It is also shifting from a local database to an expanded nationwide search.

TIGERlink, a project of the CDC, is a new search engine that will allow employers to post job and internship opportunities on the TIGERlink website, (https://oxy-csm.symplicity.com). This innovative program will help students search through the latest job opportunities while simultaneously keeping their résumés and documents well managed.

“TIGERlink is [an online job] database and web-based recruiting system. Students can search for jobs and internships locally and nationwide and post résumés, cover letters and other documents,” CDC Internship Coordinator Tina Delany said.

TIGERlink will offer On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) and On-Campus Interview (OCI), both web-based on-campus interview systems used nationwide which allow an individual to submit résumés and sign up for interviews with an employer.

Delaney said that the CDC is in the midst of getting the OCR module up and running. “Employers will be able to request OCR, have a résumé drop and schedule interviews with students,” Delaney said. Alumni, as well as local and nationwide employers who seek to post job opportunities at several schools, will be benefiting from the TIGERlink search engine.

Symplicity and the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) power TIGERlink. Symplicity, a web-based recruiting system and job bank used for the OCI process and job/résumé solicitations, is also employed by other institutions to create student employment profiles and calendars for career programming events.

Likewise, NACE provides employment information to college graduates and connects students with more than 5,200 career service professionals at nearly 2,000 colleges and universities nationwide through their search engine, NACElink. With these companies working with the CDC, TIGERlink looks promising for those hundreds of students who spend endless summer days searching for an internship to propel them into their desired career.

“The great thing about TIGERlink is that employers posting to it are particularly interested in Oxy students and alums. Students also have access to NACElink, those job are posted by employers nationwide,” Delany said.

TIGERlink’s easy accessibility allows current students and alumni to effortlessly identify available full-time, part-time, summer and temporary jobs and internships, and view the calendar of CDC events. However, because the system is still very new to the Oxy community, Delany and other workers at the CDC will be making themselves available to help students get setup and familiarized with the way the system works. The CDC has yet to reveal a complete guide in which the how-to’s of the program are clearly outlined.

The invaluable TIGERlink tool has been available for both students and alumni since summer break. “An e-mail was sent during the summer to all students with their username and password,” Delany said. “For students that don’t have that e-mail I can reset their username and password for them. Alums register online, they are sent an e-mail verifying their address, once they’ve verified their e-mail address I can approve them in the system.”

According to Delany, employers are directed to the Oxy website through various modes of correspondence, including e-mail and phone calls. “An e-mail was sent to employers when we went live asking them to post their job opportunities on TIGERlink,” Delany said.

When asked what inspired the CDC to make this resource available to students, Delany replied, “NACE and Symplicity, who manage TIGERlink, are well known and valued businesses in the career field, and after researching other database systems and assessing students’ needs we decided to go with NACElink.”

Several colleges across the nation have been using Symplicity and NACElink to provide career opportunities to their students and alumni. Schools such as UC Berkeley and NYU utilize the search-engines to propel their students into the business world fresh out of college.

Both systems have proven to be vital tools in ensuring college students a rewarding professional career. “Over time this tool will provide a variety of resources for students and we are excited about this new resource for students and alumni. We have many employers seeking Occidental students for jobs, we feel this is a good way for them to have access,” Delany said.
