COMEDY
Lighter, more humorous fare is always on the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre’s schedule. Located in the heart of Hollywood next to the uber-hip Bourgeois Pig Cafe, the UCB theatre is home to up-and-coming comedians like “Parks and Recreation” star Aziz Ansari and his Human Giant troupe-mates Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer; comedian-musician Demetri Martin and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star Jeff Garlin. Garlin’s “Combo Platter” show on Sunday nights costs only $1 to attend. Shows are generally open to all ages and rarely cost more than $10. Advance reservations for tickets can be made at losangeles.ucbtheatre.com, although standby tickets are often available on the night of each show.
MUSIC
Although the Sunset Strip is notorious for its slew of night clubs and iconic concert venues, the Troubadour on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood stands out thanks to its intimate size and affordable fare. On Saturday, March 6, world music troupe VISA – who performed at Oxy last semester – will be playing along with Opus Dai, Valleycircle, the Keppler Mission and the Nukes for $15. On Monday, March 8 there will be a free show featuring Year Long Disaster, a psychedelic hard rock act that recently toured with Baltimore blues-rockers Clutch. The show will be opened by National Dust, Bigbang and Normandie. The Troubadour also has a small bar in its foyer that serves drinks and munchies at additional cost. Great shows are scheduled at other venues later on in that week, such as 80s punk act The Adolescents at the El Rey Theatre on March 12.
MOVIES
On Friday, March 5 at midnight, “Spiderman” director Sam Raimi’s 35mm cut of his 1981 zombie classic “The Evil Dead” will be screened as part of a limited re-release. The cult classic horror flick made a name for itself in the 80s after being passed up by virtually every studio in the country because of its unprecedented gore. Nearly 30 years later, “The Evil Dead” has cemented its place as the godfather of zombie films. Open to “adults only,” the screening is pres3ented by bloodydisgusting.com, an online mecca for all things horror, at the Landmark Nuart theatre in Santa Monica. The midnight show is part of the Nuart’s Cine Insomnia series, which will be screening Joel and Ethan Coen’s “The Big Lebowski” the following Friday, March 12 at midnight. Tickets for both screenings are available at landmarktheatres.com.
CAMPING
For a break from urban entertainment, nature-loving students have a variety of hiking and camping opportunities at their disposal in Southern California. Although many local hiking and camping spots are unsafe because of the severe damage caused to the Angeles National Forest in recent months by extensive fires and flooding, there are similar recreational options in Santa Barbara County about an hour and a half drive from Eagle Rock. The Cachuma Lake Recreation Area is nestled in the Los Padres National Forest in Santa Barbara and has first-come, first-served camping spots available for $20 a day. The recreation area has public restrooms, a general store, swimming pool, playground, shower facilities and water spigots placed at regular intervals throughout the campground. The best camping spots overlook Cachuma Lake itself, a man-made drinking reservoir (no swimming allowed!) whose tide laps up against the rocky cliffs to create a soothing, natural soundtrack.
