I am a little disappointed at some of the students at Oxy. Oxy claims to be a pluralistic community where different people can gather and talk from different backgrounds and perspectives. However, this ideal seems to pushed aside when a student displays an unpopular opinion. Recently, the Oxy Hillel has put some posters around campus saying why they support Israel. ” I am pro-Israel because I’m Jewish,” or “I am pro-Israel because I believe every nation has the right to defend themselves,” were posted throughout campus with the permission of Occidental’s student services. The posters stated an unpopular opinion on college campuses and tried showing another side to a controversial issue. Just a few days after these posters were put up, some students decided to cross out Israel and write Palestine instead. Others verbally attacked and mocked some of the Hillel board members. What right do people have to get up in someone’s face or vandalize a poster simply because they disagree with a certain perspective? Many of the Jewish students who support Israel are happy to discuss some of the issues, and yes, even hear the other side. Nevertheless, dialogue like this should always be done in the most peaceful manner where people recognize that each person has a right to an opinion.
