Pasadena Suicide Bridge
Finished in 1913, the quaint Colorado Street Bridge hearkens back to that idyllic era before Los Angeles became the metropolis it is today. As urban legend goes, the first death happened as the bridge was being built, when a worker fell down 150 feet into wet concrete to his death. His body was supposedly entombed in the cement. The bridge has seen over 150 deaths and has been dubbed the “Suicide Bridge.” Most of the suicides occurred during the Great Depression, with the most infamous being of Myrtle Ward in 1937. The story goes that the twenty-two year old mother first threw her three year old daughter off of the bridge before jumping to her death. The child landed in a tree and survived, and the rumor is that Ward’s ghost haunts the area in search of her baby. Paranormal activity has been extensively witnessed in the area. Common sightings are figures jumping off of the bridge and disappearing, as well as apparitions standing in the road. Additionally, mystifying sounds and strange animal behavior has been reported. Suicide is still a pretty regular occurrence at the bridge, with the City of Pasadena still trying to find an effective deterrent.
