The Hollywood Sign
Peg Entwistle was a talented Broadway and Hollywood actress in the 1920s and early 1930s who could only secure small roles. She had a tumultuous personal life, being raised by her uncle and a failed marriage to an abusive husband. On September 16, 1932, Entwistle climbed up the H of the (then) Hollywoodland sign and jumped off, killing herself. Two days later, a hiker found her body, with a suicide note in her purse reading, “I am afraid I am a coward and I am sorry for many things. If I had only done this long ago I could have saved a lot of pain.” Her spirit has been spotted in the area, with the scent of her Gardenia perfume being reported by many. Her story is emblematic of the experience of a struggling creative in the entertainment industry, inspiring many artworks and references. Most recently, her story was an inspiration for Ryan Murphy’s television show “Hollywood.”
