Marvel Phase Three ushers in new era

41

Big news, true believers! This week Marvel Studios unveiled Phase Three, their slate of films set to be released over the next five years. Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, took to the stage of the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood last Tuesday, and, with the atmosphere of an Apple Keynote, revealed the details of Marvel’s upcoming projects.

Nine movies are set to take place over the next five years in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and, while I am excited for them all, those included here are my most anticipated titles.

Captain America: Civil War” (May 6, 2016)

“Captain America: Civil War” will be loosely based on the events of “Marvel Civil War”—one of my favorite comic book events. In the wake of a tragedy, a superhero registration act forces costumed heroes to reveal themselves to the world. Superheroes take sides with either Captain America (anti-registration) or Iron Man (pro-registration). Robert Downy Jr. will be reprising his role as Iron Man alongside Chris Evans as Captain America.

In addition, “Captain America: Civil War” will feature the first appearance of “Black Panther,” played by Chadwick Boseman. Black Panther will have his own movie Nov. 3, 2017. I am excited to see how Black Panther and his home country, Wakanda (with its amazing technology and vibranium reserves), play into the overall universe.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2” (May 5, 2017)

The first “Guardians” is one of my favorite Marvel movies since “The Avengers.” “Guardians” is a touching story that adds levity to an increasingly dour genre. I cannot wait to see Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel and Dave Bautista reprise their roles—and jam to Awesome Mix Vol. 2—in a title that will hopefully tie “Guardians” to the greater “Avengers” universe.

Captain Marvel” (July 6, 2018)

Featuring the first lead woman in the Marvel Studios line of movies, “Captain Marvel” will focus on Carol Danvers, one of the most powerful heroes in this line-up. Her super powers include flying at six times the speed of sound, absorbing energy and more. Captain Marvel and Dr. Strange have been known to team up in the past, so fans may be seeing her earlier than expected in Dr. Strange‘s Nov. 4, 2016 release.

Avengers: Infinity War Part I” (May 4, 2018) & “Avengers: Infinity War Part II” (May 3, 2019)

The standalone titles are great, but the final films of phase three, “Infinity War Part I & II,” will hopefully collect the heroes from all of the phases in a fight to save the universe. Freeze me for five years so I do not have to wait for this glorious finale.
